Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park is located on 80 wooded acres along the Yellow River near Danbury, Wisconsin. The park is a living history site where reconstructed fur trade posts occupy the actual sites where they were once operated from 1802 to 1805, alongside an authentic Woodland Indian Village.
The 80-acre park, a National Register of Historic Places Site, is operated by the Burnett County Historical Society with support from the membership and Burnett County. For more information, click here.
The Chetek Area Calhoun Museum
Barron County
Mission Statement: To document,
preserve and teach the history of
the Chetek area for future generations
to appreciate and enjoy.
The Chetek Area Calhoun Museum,
operated by the Chetek Area Historical
Society, is a membership-supported
non-profit organization that promotes and
interprets the history of the greater Chetek area of northern Wisconsin. In addition to the collection of artifacts from times gone by, which are on display in downtown Chetek, the Museum also hosts a variety of events during the year that serve to entertain and teach people about life in another time.
The Museum has four focal points, the lumbering industry, the tourist industry, the Native American influence and the service of Chetek area residents in the US Military.
The Calhoun Museum serves as the liaison between the vibrant, current day Chetek, and its unique and intriguing past. Collections are constantly being expanded and improved by the families and friends of former Chetek residents who settled this area and founded this city, and companies that make life in Chetek possible. Remembering and honoring the past gives us perspective as we move into the next millennium.
Future plans for the museum include developing a cultural center in Chetek that will offer space to host educational outreach events, traveling displays as well as housing the ever-expanding current collection.
Volunteers allow the Museum to be open from 1PM - 4:30 PM, six days per week from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and may also be available by appointment. It is located at 120 Knapp Street, in downtown Chetek. Contributions by members and supporters play a vital role in its future, and are fully tax deductible. Polk County Museum - Preserving our rich heritage for over 70 years!
Thanks to efforts of the Polk County Historical Society, much of our county's past has been preserved for future generations. Preserving our rich heritage began when the society was formed in 1937. Perhaps its most important accomplishment is the operating of the Polk County Museum. The old courthouse that was built in 1899 and is on the National Register of Historic Places was converted into three floors of galleries in 1976.
If you walk through the museum, you get a sample of life
around the early 1900's. The more than fifty galleries
feature a fully equipped general store, blacksmith shop,
barbershop, early kitchen, hardware store, bedroom and
parlor, ethnic exhibits, military room, and the Native
American room which even houses a wigwam.
Join the Polk County Historical Society. Meetings are on
the 4th Tuesday of every month at the Polk County Justice
Center, March – November. This old courthouse is the
museum, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
